If you looking to rent a stylish little house in the Spanish Mediterranean, we just found the perfect place. A tiny stucco home on the island of Mallorca, just east of the Spanish coast, has been converted into a thoroughly contemporary rental with a pool, decks, and a shipping container for the upstairs bedroom. Balbina & Miquel will host lucky visitors in a quiet little neighborhood in Palma.
The conversion of an old villa into a modern light-filled space is a bit of an achievement. The ground floor features a modern kitchen and dining area that open directly to the small courtyard in back though a large sliding glass door. An itty bitty pool and shaded patio make for a relaxed afternoon. Even though the home is small, the designers still took space to make room for a small tree inserted into the living area, providing a bit of natural visual relief and plenty of indirect sunlight.
In the evening guests climb up a spiral stairway to a cozy bedroom overlooking the Spanish tile-clad neighboring roofs. The bedroom is contained inside a shipping container, clad in wood and bookended in full-height glass. Step outside onto the fake grass and immerse yourself in the city.
The big windows are protected by a shutter that rolls out the full length of the container. Clad in wood, the container is significantly softened, and a small round window which pivots to open in the middle provides fresh air at night. The best part is that you can have it for a very reasonable $105 a night.
