Beijing is notorious worldwide for its air pollution, but a concerned middle school principal’s decision to suspend classes amid last week’s smog attack has sparked controversy throughout China. The suspension goes against the instruction of the municipal government, which advises schools to continue classes until the alert is upgraded to a severe “red” level. The temporary closure of classes marks the first time a school has been shut down due to heavy pollution in Beijing.
