Since launching his studio in 2009, London-based designer Benjamin Hubert [1] has achieved widespread recognition and critical acclaim for his innovative use of materials and industrial design [2]. Hubert manages to turn heads with one of his latest work – Float – a pendant lamp made entirely from sustainable cork. Using traditional wood working techniques, blocks of Portuguese cork are manually turned to create a hollow shade. When illuminated, the natural cork surface emits a warming glow. Although the production process creates a high volume of waste, leftover dust is regenerated into other blocks of cork for the production of more lamps.

Lately we have seen an increasing trend in designers and companies using cork in their work [3]. Benjamin Hubert sets the bar high for his innovative use of this largely commercial material in lighting. And while other designers have tried to gentrify the humble cork by combining it with other materials, Hubert works towards a visual reduction. Stripped of all detailing, Float is a simple classic design that allows us to appreciate, even further, the raw materiality of eco-friendly cork [4].

Hubert’s young career has already seen him form impressive collaborations with brands including Moroso and Ligne Roset, where he has deployed his usual trademark style of creating innovative designs using surprising materials.
