Billionaire Climate Activist Tom Steyer Launches Anti Keystone XL Pipeline Campaign
Billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer just launched an anti-Keystone XL Pipeline campaign that mobilizes President Obama’s grassroots supporters to help the President strike down what many believe would be one of the most environmentally destructive energy projects of all time. Called “We Love Our Land,” the campaign will flood social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter with petitions and videos depicting the March 2013 tar sands spill in Mayflower, Arkansas, along with a host of other incriminating information.
President Obama has the unenviable task of either approving or shutting down the Keystone XL Pipeline, which is a hot topic in Washington. Steyer told The San Francisco Chronicle that this campaign isn’t about bashing the President, but rather about lending support.
““We think we’re supporting the President in doing what he wants to do but finds difficult. We view this as support,” Steyer said. “This is a global problem with a global solution. We think there’s a chance for him to be an absolute hero here. Keystone is really important in that context, but obviously it’s not the only thing.”
In order to illustrate the toxicity of oil sands, Steyer commissioned an independent lab analysis of the chemicals present in a spilled sample of the viscous substance. The Environmental Working Group subsequently found seven highly toxic substances: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, xylene, chromium and lead in one sample, according to a recent press statement.
The campaign will run for 10 months – through next Labor Day.
