Bentley’s Biofuel-Powered Supercar Can Go Up to 200 MPH on Ice

What’s even better than owning a Bentley? Owning a biofuel -powered Bentley than can go over 200 MPH — on ice! Bentley is set to showcase its new Supersports ‘Ice Speed Record’ convertible at the Geneva Auto Show this week. This new model, limited to just 100 cars worldwide, is a celebration of the the world ice speed record that was set two weeks ago by Finland’s four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen in a Bentley Continental Supersports convertible, which ran entirely on biofuels.
Bentley’s sports car hit a blazing speed of 205.48 mph while driving on the frozen Baltic Sea, off the coast of Finland. Driver Juha Kankkunen beat his own previous record of 199.83 mph set in 2007.
Wolfgang Duerheimer, Bentley’s new Chairman and Chief Executive, said: “Juha Kankkunen’s drive was a remarkable achievement and worthy of a very special car. The Continental Supersports ‘Ice Speed Record’ is a true driver’s car that captures that unique Bentley spirit. It offers extreme performance, agility and an extrovert personality, while retaining the refinement, handcrafted luxury and comfort our customers expect.”
The car, with a 6-liter, twin turbo-charged W12 engine, can go from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, can reach 100 mph from a standing start in only 9.5 seconds, and is by far the most powerful Bentley so far. The car can run on gasoline, E85 bio-ethanol, or any combination of the two and “offers a reduction of up to 70 per cent in CO2 emissions on a well-to-wheel basis, a measure of a fuel’s net contribution to the atmosphere, not just tailpipe emissions,” a statement from the company said.
What’s more, an on-board fuel supply system monitors the content of the fuel tank to make sure that power and torque remain constant regardless of the ratio of petrol to biofuel. The car’s all-wheel drive system provides outstanding traction in all weather conditions (clearly), though we’re still not sure why anyone would really want to drive 200 mph on ice.
In case you’re interested, the car comes in three colors: Beluga, Quartzite and Arctica White. So if $300,000 is pocket change for you — you know where to turn.
