Birdcraft: Reclaimed Wood Sculpture Provides Nesting Ground for Chimney Swifts

The Stevens Point Sculpture Park in partnership with the Aldo Leopold Audubon Society gave artist Mike Godell the opportunity to build “Birdcraft” – an organic sculpture that explores the aesthetic possibilities of constructed Chimney Swift towers. The Chimney Swift is a bird that commonly nests in chimneys. The population has been in decline due to a loss of habitat, as more and more chimneys are capped or torn down. Birdcraft’s sculptural shell is made of reclaimed lumber and it conceals a 12-foot-tall nesting chamber. The first opportunity to see if Chimney Swifts will use the tower will be this Spring, during the birds’ migration.
