We’ve long been fans of Brooklyn green furniture team Uhuru Design. Every year at BKLYN Designs we eagerly look forward to seeing Uhuru’s latest work, from the beautiful recycled scrap wood Stoolen series that we spotted in 2006, to the clever Cutoffs Table from 2007, both of which utilize reclaimed wood as the main design concept. In fact, Uhuru’s most recognizable style seems to be their unique sensibility in finding innovative ways to turn old wood scraps into stunning pieces of contemporary furniture. So, what are we keeping an eye on for 2008? The answer is Bourbon Barrel Furniture. Uhuru will be launching a brand new line of furniture at BKLYN Designs 2008, featuring a chair, bench, table and stool, all made from reclaimed bourbon barrels.

The team at Uhuru told us that they don’t even have a name for this line of furniture yet, but it sure is gorgeous. The lines of each piece are simple and minimal, and it is the patina of the reclaimed bourbon barrel wood which gives these pieces a warmth and personality that they wouldn’t have if they were just regular virgin wood. But it isn’t just the wood which is eco-friendly in this collection. The metal frames are made from salvaged leaf springs from old trucks, and all finishes and varnishes are low VOC as well.

If you are in the New York City area this weekend, stop by BKLYN Designs to check out Uhuru’s latest collection, as well as gorgeous green furniture from other Brooklyn-based designers. If you are around on Sunday, be sure to catch Inhabitat’s Green Design Walking tour – starting at 2pm in St. Ann’s Warehouse. Hope to see you there!

Wow! That chair is amazing! I absolutely love it! How ingenious to create something so modern of something of opposite origin. I wonder how much it’ll cost..?

I really love Uhuru. Beautiful furniture creations and excellent craftsmanship. I was reading a related article over at 3rings… it’s too funny for words. Perhaps of interest to other Inhabitat fans. Check it out at http://3rings.designerpages.com/2008/05/06/at-bklyn-designs-i-love-i-beam/
