TODD LABY - RHUBARB DESIGNS

Last week I attended the opening of the Bay Area Furniture Art exhibit at the Blue Room Gallery. One of the designers that stood out to my green-hunting eye was Todd Laby, whose company, Rhubarb Decor, aims to improve the perception of green furniture through “aesthetics with ethics.”

Laby’s “Slant” collection of plyboo (bamboo plywood) bookshelves brings a smart concept to eco-friendly materials and simple design. As you can see from the image above (please excuse inadvertent product placement), the “Full Slant” allows books to recline naturally, unlike most shelves where books lean awkwardly in search of comfort and inflict gradual damage on their spines (much like a human, no?). The Full Slant has two siblings, Slim Slant and Wall Slant, to accomodate your spacial needs. It’s a family of modern La-Z-Boys for your books.

“Rhubarb’s design concept is deeply rooted in maximizing aesthetic and functional impact, while minimizing the impact on the environment.”
Apparently their design concept is NOT about having any information on their web site. I guess it’s all about the style and not about actually selling furniture.

Hey, Lost Customer,

I’m glad you like the furniture enough to look to purchase. It is my understanding that Todd Laby/Rhubarb are emerging designs, and not everything is on the site yet. Todd told me that the images for the Slant series will be up in a few weeks. In the meantime, if you are interested in purchasing his work, I’m sure he’d be thrilled to speak to you. Just email him!

I was able to check out the Full Slant unit in San Francisco and it really is a smart, functional piece that looks great. Todd Laby is definitely a designer to keep and eye on.

Great aesthetic and serious craftmanship on this table - I saw the same Blue Room show and this was clearly the standout piece.

I saw Todd Laby’s furniture at an artist’s reception at the Blue Room Gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District. He showed a piece from this Slant collection - what an elegant combination of creativity, style, and functionality!

[…] since we first laid eyes on Todd Laby’s stunning green furniture design back in 2005, we’ve been huge fans. Unlike so much of what passes for ’sustainable design’ […]
