Charlotte-based Boxman Studios has repurposed shipping containers into buildings across the US since 2008 - and now, due to their growing reputation and success, they've announced plans to double their 20-person operation. This company is considered a pioneer in the field of shipping container architecture, and its projects range from housing to retail and even pop-up installations for major companies such as Google.

Boxman Studios was inspired to work with shipping containers during the economic downturn of 2008. They salvaged and bought decommissioned containers from old shipping and storage yards and customized them to fit a wide range of applications. Fast-forward to present day and cargotecture has caught on as an innovative new form of architecture – and shipping container projects are popping up across the US and around the world.

Boxman Studios‘ growth has allowed the company to jump into more urban infrastructure projects from the private housing realm. The studio’s offices are moving into a 65,000 square-foot-space in Charlotte, North Carolina that includes areas for design, manufacturing, storage, and logistics. The firm’s upcoming projects include pop-up and permanent additions for clients such as Nike, Google and Whole Foods.
