Gallery: Unmodified Nissan LEAF Enters Pike’s Peak Hill Climb Race

That an electric car would enter the grueling Pike’s Peak Hill Climb race is not in itself surprising: last year’s champion was Ikuo Hanawa’s custom-built EV Sports Concept HER-02 from Japan. That a completely stock, unmodified, 110-horsepower Nissan LEAF would attempt to compete is news, however.

To be piloted by professional racer Chad Hord, the LEAF will race competitors up a 12.42-mile course with 156 turns, starting at an altitude of 9,390 feet and ending at the mountain’s 14,110 summit. Can the LEAF compete in the nearly 100-year-old grueling race? We will find out June 26 when Pike’s Peak kicks off above Colorado Springs. Check out the video above of last year’s champion piloting the steep course.
