Breaking News: Nissan LEAF Struggles with Start Failures

The 2011 Nissan LEAF [5] has hit a rough patch: owners on MyNissanLeaf.com [6] have been reporting recently that the vehicle will not restart under certain circumstances. After using the car’s air conditioning system, some LEAF vehicles display the power steering, battery, and vehicle warning lights while the car continues to run. If the driver turns off the vehicle at that point to restart, the vehicle will not re-engage its Ready mode, and it will need to be towed to the dealer. What’s a LEAF owner to do?

There is no official fix yet, although Nissan is working to figure out what the source of the problem is. For now, Nissan LEAF owners should drive to a safe area before powering down their vehicles in the event that they see these warning lights. Some owners report that disconnecting the LEAF’s auxiliary battery under the hood for 10 minutes will allow the car to restart, and some dealers are upgrading or downgrading vehicle operating systems or recharging A/C systems as a fix, but there doesn’t seem to be a definitive or permanent solution at the moment.
