Gallery: Breathtaking Mashpi Lodge Retreat Wins the 2014 World Travel A...

Although modern in design, the Mashpi lodge is warm, welcoming, and comfortable.

The stunning Mashpi Rainforest Eco-Lodge has been honored with a 2014 World Travel Award as Ecuador’s Leading Green Hotel. Located in the Mashpi Rainforest Biodiversity Reserve, the lodge is dedicated to sustainability, and ensures a high degree of care for the biodiversity of local ecosystems. It has also been lauded for its many programs that benefit local indigenous communities, as well as for its high standards of water conservation. Interior designer Diego Arteta collaborated with Architect Alfredo Ribadeneira to create this gorgeous retreat, where guests can revel in the beauty of the cloudforest, with minimal impact on its surroundings.

Opened in 2012, the eco-lodge is nestled at 3,116 feet high in the Ecuadorian Andes nature reserve, close to the capital city of Quito. Much of the structure was pre-assembled in Quito and transported to the site to minimize disruption to the surrounding rainforest. The structure’s metal base is encased in glass walls and simple materials, ensuring that guests can always look out over the breathtaking scenery. Many of the materials used to build the lodge were locally sourced, such as the red panels lining the corridors. The interior furnishings pair local Ecuadorian crafts with contemporary luxury, with some suites including pieces from Donghia and Phillipe Starck bathtubs.

Masphi has many luxury facilities, including a spa and boutique, and surrounding the lodge are trails, crystalline natural pools, a terrace, and an observation tower to explore.  Mashpi’s focus on sustainability extends beyond its immediate environs: the retreat is committed to scientific education, research, and conservation. The facility hosts many projects in partnership with esteemed universities to learn more about the startlingly rich and bio-diverse region, and in doing so, work towards preserving it for the future.
