New York Fashion Week: BODKIN Fall 2009

Materials are an essential part of eco fashion. And with materials such as silk blessed by the Dalai Lama, recycled PET plastic bottles, and organic cotton, Brooklyn-based Bodkin is shining example of eco-chic in the fashion world. Bodkin’s designer, Eviana Hartman, started the label just a year ago, and already Bodkin is making a splash as the first eco-conscious recipient of the Ecco Domani award. The label’s Fall/Winter 2009 collection was exhibited this week at the Horticultural Society of New York — and the Inhabitat team was on the scene to check it out. We were impressed with the effortlessly chic, super wearable looks which illustrate how easily sustainable style can be to incorporate into any wardrobe.

Bodkin’s Fall 2009 collection showcased a set of garments that are simple and classic in form, architecturally structured, with unexpected details such as cutaway sleeves and unusual materials. A cozy sweater dress made of organic cotton french terry and a simple t-shirt and skirt paired with an organic wool coat lined with recycled polyester were two outfits that could certainly keep a girl warm and eco-chic! The collection also showed numerous versatile dresses sure to be appropriate in a variety of occasions, such as a black romper make of bamboo rayon with charming off-the-shoulder sleeves, as well as tunics and dresses that could be perfectly paired with high boots and colorful tights.

Designer Eviana Hartman is quick to point out that eco fashion isn’t just about creating something stylish made from bamboo or hemp — it is about thinking long and hard where your materials are coming from and whether sourcing material and labor can be done in a sustainable manner. And even with all the production details that must be considered alongside the creative process, Eviana has shown once and for all that eco-fashion can be thoughtful, wearable and chic — all at the same time.
