Gallery: Buckeye Bullet Electric Racer...

Electric cars don’t exactly have a reputation for being serious speed demons — but that could change as Ohio State‘s lithium ion-powered Buckeye Bullet 2 just shattered the world land speed record for a battery-powered vehicle. The streamlined electric racer averaged 291 miles per hour in back-to-back tests this week in the Utah Salt Flats.

The Bullet, which was designed by students at Ohio State University, may not be coming to a dealership near you anytime soon, but its battery comes from A123 Systems, whose products will also power Chrysler cars and Eaton trucks. The Bullet’s body comes from EV manufacturer Venturi, which is based in Monaco and features models like the Fetish.

So who said EVs weren’t sexy?
