Buijtenkeuken is a Mobile Kitchen for the Dutch Countryside

Buijtenkeuken ^[6] is a small, mobile kitchen made of recycled materials in the The Netherlands. Commissioned by curator Ester van de Wiel, Studio Elmo Vermijs ^[7] transformed an existing outdoor bakery to create the new cooking facility. And renowned chef Pepijn Schmeink ^[8] weighed in on the wood-fired stove's painstaking construction.

Part of a multi-year project that has five components (including an outdoor brewery, nursery and mini-hotel), Buijtenkeuken is designed to re-examine the relationship between human activities and the outdoors. The former bakehouse used to service people working in the surrounding countryside, while the swankier, renovated kitchen ^[9] will be used to host dinners and workshops.

Carted around the country on a trailer wagon, Buijtenkeuken will allow celebrated food designers to explore new ways of preparing and preserving food within the constraints posed by the kitchen’s space and nomadic status. Gerbrand Dros helped to redesign the stove. This fascinating project joins the ranks of mobile pizzerias ^[10] and pop-up restaurants ^[11] that are completely redefining our relationship to food in the 21st century.
