Muir Trail Hut in California [5]

Muir Trail Hut stands at 12,059 feet within California’s rocky peaks, and is one of the trail’s greatest landmarks. Built in 1930 by the Sierra Club of California [6], this humble-yet-strong shelter is built from local stone, and  blends perfectly into the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Slab Wood Shelter in Connecticut [7]

Made by artist Dave Sinaguglia [7], this rustic shelter was created with slab wood off-cuts. Located in a beautiful pine forest near Hartford [8], Connecticut, this shelter is a great place to find solitude and inspiration.

Dovecote Studio in Suffolk [9]

Dovecote Studio on the Suffolk coast is built inside the shell of an old Victorian dovecote. Designed by Haworth Tompkins Studio [9], this highly contrasting shelter now houses the Aldeburgh Music School [10]‘s studio.

Boat Roof Shed in the Shetland isles [11]

Located on a remote island called Hoswick [12] off Scotland’s north coast, this gorgeous little cabin was built with local stones and boat fragments. The house’s most distinctive feature is that it uses part of an old boat as a roof, and it was featured by curator Jed Lind [13] in an exhibition called Small is Beautiful.

Mobile Ice Fishing Shacks in Quebec [14]

When Quebec’s Lake Champlain [15] freezes every year, its inhabitants push their shacks into it to find their favorite fishing spots. Painted in bright colors, these cute skating shelters offer protection from the freezing temperatures and biting winds.

The Rock Restaurant in Zanzibar [16]

If you really want to get far away from it all, hop on a boat to Zanzibar [17] and visit the Rock Restaurant. This eatery stands on a rock in the middle of the Indian Ocean and only has space for a handful of people.
