Rumor has it, the Cadillac Converj [4]luxury coupe has been approved for production – again. After wowing the crowds at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009, and enduring an on-again off-again release deal [5]with General Motors, the sleek sports coupe will be Cadillac’s first plug-in electric sedan [6], and on top of that, the fastest!

Inside sources are optimistic that the coupe is back in the GM production plan for good and will most likely be launched as a 2013 and a 2014 model. Based on the same platform as the Chevy Volt [7], the Converj will feature an updated version of the extended-range electric powertrain that allows it to travel 40 miles on a single charge without fuel. This update will also include faster acceleration.

Many say it’s about time Cadillac steps up their plug-in game. The brand’s sole electric vehicle [6] is still the 2011 Escalade Hybrid, not exactly the paradigm of green transportation, nor the ideal gateway vehicle for those looking to transition. With the Chevy Volt, the most fuel-efficient compact car in the US almost completely sold out this year, and other luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi preparing to carry multiple plug-in options [8], Cadillac has the opportunity with the Converj Coupe, to find its place amongst the innovative electric vehicles while still remaining the classic luxury brand.
