Last year, California residents installed more rooftop solar capacity [2] in one year than in the previous thirty combined! In 2013 alone, the state added a whopping 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity to their homes, up from an already impressive 500 MW in 2012 [3]. The incredible spike can be attributed in part to the increasing affordability of photovoltaic panels.

As 2013 came to a close, California announced its total rooftop solar capacity had doubled in just one year. The state boasted 1,000 MW of accrued rooftop solar capacity [5], demonstrating that solar energy is not only in demand, but also affordable. At this rate, Solar Industry Magazine [6] notes that California’s rooftop solar capacity will grow to 5,000 MW by 2014, which would blast through the Million Solar Roofs Initiative [7] that aims to install 3,000 MW by 2016.

California boasts more rooftop solar systems than any other state, but American citizens in other states are increasingly turning to solar energy [8]. Since 2012, 200,000 rooftop solar arrays have been added to homes and businesses across the United States, according to Bloomberg News. The sharp decline of PV panels over the past 5-10 years has made rooftop solar a more feasible option for mostly middle class Americans.
