Casabella [1] just unveiled a new vacuum cleaner [2] concept dubbed the Limbo [3] that is designed to be powered by the trash it consumes! The stair-climbing vacuum cleaner uses a process called microbial electrolysis [4] to generate power from the bacteria it picks up – so it could theoretically work constantly without the need for a charging station.

Although Casabella [1]‘s vacuum cleaner is currently a concept, it certainly points to exciting possibilities for future designs. While automated cleaners are able to detect staircases in order to prevent themselves from falling down, they can’t yet climb them. That’s not the case with the Limbo, which is equipped with four giant caterpillar tracked wheels made from flexible honeycomb-structured materials. The robo-vacuum is able to climb starsĀ  and position itself to deal with any dust that might be there. The Limbo can also get close to walls and doorways to suck up any dirt that might be in those pesky nooks and crannies.

Unlike most automated vacuums that are round and squat, the Limbo’s design is based around its stair climbing ability, however that’s not what makes it amazingly green. Instead of using a standard battery the Limbo eats dirt, including bacteria, and then generates electricity using the waste material. All of this bodes well for the future of self-powered household products, especially if the technology could be duplicated in other appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.
