Apparently, manufacturing of one of the most durable wristwatches in the world was just not enough for electronics maker Casio. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the company decided to flex their clock-making prowess by taking their popular G-Shock series to the next level – making them run on solar power.

Casio has developed three new models in time for Earth Day. Evocative of the original G-Shock wristwatch (which was originally released in 1983), the new timekeepers will now feature a solar panel in the front that will power the battery. To top it off, all packaging for these three models will be made out of 100% recycled paper. The solar powered G-Shocks will come in three colors and will be available soon.

I bought a solar-powered G-shock for my husband about a year ago and it isn’t working. It works when set in the light for a few hours, but even then it only lasts about an hour for him. I am very disappointed and wonder how I can get it fixed without spending a bunch of money.

I have a G shock casio and when the battery died I took it to the jewelers to have the battery replaced. As it works out they dont sell or want to seel the rechargable batteries. I was left with the option of replacing the battery with one that cant be recharged. Why sell a watch if there is no backup system with the jewelers. I think it stinks. Where do I get a rechargable battery from???????????

Mine won’t even hold a charge anymore. It died all of a sudden. It started resetting, now if i hold it up to light it works great, but get it in a shadow and it doesn’t work. I changed the battery for another I had lying around, (also from a solar gshock) and it doesn’t work any better.. I think the solar panels quit.. Disappointed..

This is nothing new. I’m currently wearing a gshock tough solar watch (g-2310) that I bough about 4 – 5 years ago (not sure anymore).
And btw, one of the selling point was to never have to change the battery, but I’ve not been able to use the backlight for the past year and recently I can’t even push a button without it dying on me.
They are very, very good watch… but the solar aspect is really not holding up.

FYI – Casio has been making the solar-powered G-Shock watches for at least 5 years – I have one and it has been a tremendous and accurate performer
