Green Cabinet recently unveiled plans to transform a shipping container into an elegant pavilion for exhibiting arts and crafts. The pavilion is opaque from the outside-in but transparent from the inside-out. The facade is covered with a mirrored coating, and its reflective properties create an interesting interaction between the building and the environment.

An exciting new project in Detroit will use recycled shipping containers to create an innovative new community space that will be used to bring back the art of storytelling. The plan calls for two phases of construction. The first will cover a community lobby called First Container, which would later be joined by phase two, a shipping container space and hotel called Collision Works. Both projects will re-enliven Detroit’s Eastern Market area, inviting locals and visitors to reconnect and share stories, while encouraging community programming in the shipping container complex.

St. Louis is about to receive its first shipping container structure, a three-story mixed-use building that will be built using 10 shipping containers. Designed by Architect Anthony Duncan for Patrick Barnidge’s development firm, Delsa Development, the new building will be built on a city-owned lot in the Grove area of Forest Park Southeast. It will be erected on the site of a once-condemned single-family home, and the project is quickly gaining favor in the neighborhood.

Michele Bertomen and David Boyle set out the achieve the American dream by building their own home in Brooklyn, New York. But the house they chose to create is undoubtedly a little different from the typical, white picket-fenced version that may spring to mind. The couple built the four-level residence out of six stacked shipping containers over the past few years, and were finally able to move in just a short while ago. High-end clothing store Aether Apparel just launched its first standalone retail shop in San Francisco – and it’s made from three recycled shipping containers stacked one atop another! The sophisticated building is the latest addition to PROXY, a temporary cargotecture development in Hayes Valley which already boasts a coffee shop, an ice-cream parlor and a Biergarten. Aether’s towering shipping container store was designed by architects Envelope A&D working in collaboration with Aether designer Thierry Gaugain, and it was fabricated by Chris French Metal.

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is coming to Australia in the first week of March and the Young Designers at HASSELL have created the Urban Coffee Farm and Brew Bar as a centerpiece for this year’s festival. This urban intervention will transform the steps of the amphitheater at Melbourne’s River Yarra into a literal coffee jungle in to abstractly demonstrate the journey that coffee takes to get to Australia.
