When you flirt with the Dark Side, bad things can happen; lava burns you, offspring return to kill you, and giant space cephalopods attack your ships. In a massive tentacled disturbance in the Force, Iain Heath constructed a giant LEGO kraken to entwine a model of Darth Vader’s Super Star Destroyer. The stellar squid began as a suggestion from his boss, and it now has a permanent home at the Seattle offices of Tableau Software.

Designed by Oji Masanori, the nifty green concept is an elegant form that minimizes waste, and depending on how much you save, also tilts in a different way to add to the experience of saving. We love the simple yet dynamic shape of the bank, and the way it transforms through the act of destruction.

Dutch designers, such as Arian Brekveld and Van Eijk & Van Der Lubbe have collaborated with craftsmen in developing countries to create contemporary design pieces. Carrying a load of leather candelabras in his suitcase, Dutch designer Pepe Heykoop just got back from Mumbai, India. In the slums of the city, he worked with 15 craftswomen in creating signature leather interior accessories made of leftover leather from furniture industry by makers in Mumbai. In his Amsterdam studio, he is now putting a final touch to the prototypes of his ‘tailored candelabra’. The pressure is on, because in two weeks time, these new designs will be launched at the world’s leading design event, the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Industrial design duo Leander Angerer and David Ross have redesigned a late Victorian-era staircase over three stories in a private home in northwest London for Cathal McAteer, founder of Folk Clothing. Reusing the existing joinery, Angerer and Ross have converted an exquisite Victorian staircase into a contemporary, light and musical structure by replacing the banisters with tennis racket strings.

Dutch designer Tim Van Cromvoirt wanted to create a wall application that would look organic and act like living organism. So he used his final year at the ST. Joost Academy, in Breda to experiment with materials and reactions. What he developed was Thermophores, a spiky, sensitive and surreal piece of wall-art that reacts to changing temperatures.

Toronto-based Cube Works Studio recently set a new Guinness World Record by building the world’s largest Rubik’s Cube Mosaic from 80,940 cubes! Standing over 13 feet high and 200 feet wide, the artwork recreates the skyline of Macau, China. It was installed on the Macau waterfront just outside Hong Kong in December.

As “a builder, a fixer, and a do-it-myselfer”, Ariele Alasko of Brooklyn to West enjoys big tools, old wood, good pasta, and finding primo building material in the dumpster. Having moved to New York from California for art school in sculpture, she immediately fell in love with the grungy side of Brooklyn. Transitioning from sculpture to working with reclaimed material, she moved out of tracking sawdust through her apartment in to a large studio where she could develop her carpentry. Playing with the colors and textures of salvaged wood, Alasko creates beautiful geometric patterns in her tabletops and detailed pieces of furniture. Giving scraps a second chance, she fashions eco-friendly and attractive appointments that have come a long way from the trash heap.

Wristwatches were once a necessity, but now they’re entering the realm of novelty – more often than not, when you ask someone for the time they check their smartphone instead. In her installation Is six afraid of seven/ ’cause seven, eight, nine!, artist Heidi Voet weaves over four thousand wristwatches into a time-telling carpet that chimes in synchronicity. Over the course of the exhibition, individual watches will deviate, sounding off at the wrong moment to create a cacophony instead of a symphony.
