A historic Florida home has ended up stuck at sea after is was was evicted from its seaside plot. The owners of the hundred-year-old Stambaugh Cottage were forced to move it to make way for an encroaching golf course. Instead of demolishing the quaint cottage, the descendants of the pioneer who built it put it on a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway with plans to move it to a new spot, but the home has remained at sea as it awaits historic preservation status.

Turning a blight into an advantage, architects Park Sung-Hee and Na Hye Yeon from South Korea have designed the 7th Continent: Kinetic Islands which are structures that use rubbish as construction elements for a floating city.

The Waterpod just launched this Saturday, and it will now dock for public viewing at various locations in Manhattan’s five boroughs. We had the chance to conduct an exclusive interview with Lonny Grafman, the project’s sustainability advisor, about this floating model of self-sufficiency.

For the community of Makoko of Lagos, Nigeria life on the water is nothing new. Prone to flooding, residents have dealt with encroaching waters for generations by building houses on stilts and using canoes as their main source of transport. Now, with the threat of sea level rise from climate change, and developers who want to tear the community down, Makoko is in a state of uncertainty. Nigerian-born architect Kunle Adeyemi has a vision for the city of 250,000 people that involves constructing a group of floating structures that have better access to sanitation, fresh water, and waste disposal. His first endeavor would be to build a three-story school held afloat by plastic drums.

In light of all the dire news related to climate change, rising sea levels and the natural disasters which have stricken numerous coastal areas around the world, we here at Inhabitat would like to highlight an interview Inhabitat Editor-in-Chief Jill Fehrenbacher conducted with architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio.nl.
