Dwell on Design, America’s largest modern design event, is set to kick off this Friday at the Los Angeles Convention Center! This annual exhibition features a vast array of green designs ranging from home products to larger eco-pavilions and even prefab homes. This year’s lineup includes more than 2,000 products from more than 400 exhibitors, five full-scale prefab homes – including the next-generation LivingHome C6 – and more than 200 speakers dishing on the latest in modern design. The event runs from June 21-23 and tickets are still available, so register today!

Here at Inhabitat, we’ve been following New Zealand designer David Trubridge‘s career since we first spotted him at Milan Design Week years ago. As one of his country’s most celebrated designers, Trubridge emerged on the international design scene in 2001 with his airy bentwood lounge chair known as the Body Raft, and has been innovating ever since. These days, he has jumped into lighting design with his iconic organic lights and his flat pack system. In that spirit, Trubridge has released a a brand new book called So Far to share his design mind with the world. So Far is the autobiography of his life that parallels his personal journey with his design evolution, perfectly weaving the two together in a beautifully illustrated book.

Marking its 45th year, NeoCon returned to Chicago this week as North America’s largest contract furnishings trade show. Filling sixteen floors of the mammoth Merchandise Mart, architects and designer from across the globe viewed the latest and greatest furnishings, carpeting, wall coverings, and fixtures from thousands of manufacturers. Designer Derek Chen has fittingly transformed a bunch of old wine barrels into a beautiful wine rack! The San Francisco-based furniture maker recently debuted the limited edition “Pino Solo” wine tree, which he created for Newton Vineyard. To form the base of each piece, Chen repurposed oak barrels previously used to make chardonnay at the winery, giving a nod to their past lives as well as Newton’s eco-friendly philosophy.

When it comes to green furniture design, it doesn’t get much more natural than Erez Nevi Pana‘s Soilid Chair, which is made from a mixture of soil, fungi and other natural materials. The materials are measured by volume and weight, mixed together and left to rise overnight at room temperature. The Soilid mixture can then be shaped and molded in a plaster or wood mold to create different shapes.

Designer/maker Richard Foxcroft recently brought together ancient barrel making and boat building techniques to create a beautiful line of wooden hammocks. Foxcroft’s Hertfordshire Hammocks are made of English oak from a sustainably managed woodland, and they’re designed to look good, feel good and last for many years. The wood is steam-bent to create comfortable curved shapes, and a stand is available in case there aren’t any trees nearby.

Designer Martin Davis created Grandpa’s Desk after he was commissioned by a client to turn two wardrobes, built decades ago by her grandfather, into a new piece of furniture. Asked to design an office desk, Davis pulled apart the old wardrobes and used the timber to create a modern and unique construction steeped in the spirit of the original works. Here, even old screws, nails and fittings were reclaimed and cast into resin handles to act as both a reminder of the original wardrobes, and as a source of memories every time the client opens a drawer.

Cork is a versatile material that isn’t limited to wine bottle stoppers and wedged shoes. As an emergent alternative to conventional materials used by furniture makers, cork is both stylish and eco-friendly. At last week’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, designer Erika Cross showed off an innovative new use for cork with her Vertebral Cork Chair, which is made from leftover waste from the bottle stopper industry.

The Retyrement Plan is a collection of outdoor weatherproof furniture items created from old, discarded automobile tires and recycled plastics. Anu Tandon Viera creates a woven upholstery of recycled plastic wrapper waste over a ‘frame’ of tires salvaged from old scooters to discarded trucks. The “virtually indestructible” ottomans are part of a collection that includes occasional chairs, pouffes, charpais and floor cushions made from well-traveled wheels, salvaged fabrics and reclaimed wood and bamboo.

Nervous System took inspiration from the shapes and patterns of nature to create an app that lets users design their own “cellular” wooden coffee tables. Once a customer is happy with their online design, Nervous System uses a CNC router to carve it out of plywood. The Inhabitat team stopped by their booth at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) this week for a look at their first official prototype and we have to say that it’s pretty darn cool!
