Dutch designer Willem Heeffer used 334 recycled cans to create a series of luminous upcycled chandeliers and furnishings for Top Chef Hans Välimäki’s new Midhill American diner in Helsinki, Finland. Heeffer collected the tins from local restaurants, cleaned them, and then transformed them into fork and knife holders, bar lights, a floor-to-ceiling storage display and three chandeliers. The chandeliers are made from 21 Heinz Beanz classic cans each. The lamps fit perfectly into the interior designed by Martina Rosenqvist and Vera Öller, who used old corrugated roof panels to clad the bars. The single Heinz Beanz can that started it all is for sale at Willem Heeffer‘s website.

New research suggests that people with right wing views are less likely to buy light bulbs that are labeled as “pro-environment” due to the politicized nature of the carbon debate in the United States. In a study published last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Dena Gromet of Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania found that consumers’ purchasing decisions are divided along party lines.

Lighting Design Competition. We received hundreds of entries featuring projects that employ LEDs in innovative and interesting ways, ranging from a colorful art installation that reacts to changing light to a restaurant donning beautiful ceiling lamps to a research campus adorned with LED back-lit wood walls. We narrowed all the entries we received down to just 30 finalists, and then left it up to Inhabitat readers to decide which two designs were most deserving of $1000 prizes from Elemental LED. Most plastics can be endlessly recycled without losing their indestructibility. But instead of being reused, the majority of plastics will end up as one-time-use products, finding their end as pollutants on land or in our oceans. Save Our Soup is Dutch designer David Graas’ colorful, speckled collection of recycled plastic lamps that have been created with then intent of diverting plastics from the Pacific Garbage Patch, or “soup”.

The World Lamp is a new shop light that pairs energy-efficient LEDs with a clever collapsible design that packs flat to ship and can be easily assembled once it arrives. The World Lamp uses about half the energy of a conventional 4’ fluorescent shop light, and it weighs less than 2.5 lbs. The lamp’s body is made of lightweight recycled material, and it can be either hung from the ceiling or stood up vertically. If you’re a fan of this project you can support it on Kickstarter here!

Urban Green Energy Inc has installed 120 solar and wind-powered streetlights in PingQuan, situated in the Hebei province of China. Instead of opting for costly traditional lights that would have needed to sink wires into the ground and connect to the grid, the city chose a more sustainable route. Each Sanya light is equipped with a HoYi! wind turbine and two 280 watt solar panels, allowing them to function completely off-grid.

The Drip LED Lamp designed by Italian designer Fabio Servolo is cleverly shaped as a tap and a faucet. Rather than being switched on, it is turned on exactly like a tap – by rotating the handle. The design draws a connection between the precious resources of water and energy, encouraging users to conserve energy rather than letting it ‘go down the drain.’

Omer Arbel‘s dazzling 38 Collection for Bocci features a series of suspended green lamps that double as planters. The surreal recycled glass spheres are blown with a multitude of cavities. Some spaces are deep enough to house LED lighting elements, some cavities host earth and succulents, and electricity and suspension are provided by a copper tubing system.

Bruno Dussert-Vidalet and Alessandro Dolcetta turn light into emotion with their new lighting company, Blackbody. Presenting for the first time at Euroluce during Milan Design Week earlier this month, Blackbody incorporates works from designers across the globe, including a piece called “Bonzai” designed by Italian architect and designer Aldo Cibic, and “Bell family” designed by French designer Thierry Gaugain. The lamps are designed to be long-lasting (14,000 hours life), ultra flat (2 mm thickness), glare-free, heat-free, and 100% recyclable through the use of luminous OLEDs. More than simple lamps, Blackbody’s multi-faceted forms allow architects and designers to explore innovative and personalized approaches to application.

Giuseppe Casuccio and Valerio Palmieri’s upcycled Bottle Up lamps are perfect for any restaurant or bar. Inspired by a lazy restaurant owner who let his empty bottles accumulate, the project lets business owners recycle their used bottles while also creating a gorgeously delightful lighting fixture. The design includes a detachable LED luminaire that affixes to any empty bottle, and also allows for liquids contained inside to heat, slowly evaporate and diffuse a fragrance.
