Heatherwick Studio just unveiled plans for a new greenery covered pedestrian bridge to be built across the River Thames in London. Looking like a luscious garden suspended over the water, the bridge will be the first crossing built on the Thames since Foster and Partners’ Millennium Bridge opened in 2000, and it will connect Covent Garden with the South Bank.

The greenest building is the one that’s already standing, and this week London officials announced that the buildings from the 2012 Olympic Village will be transformed into rental units, and many of them will be reserved for low-income housing. It has just been announced that the Olympic Village in London will be getting a face-lift to accommodate a new neighborhood, which London is calling the East Village. The East Village will have 2,818 brand new homes to be rented for this summer, and 1,379 of these homes will go to low-income Londoners. This is a great solution for London, since the city’s housing shortage was intensified by the global recession in 2007.

Last week London-based GrowUp unveiled their small urban farm, which produces sustainable vegetables and fish through vertical gardening and aquaponics. After successfully raising over £16,000 through a Kickstarter campaign, the team constructed their GrowUp Box from a reused shipping container that was modified to include a rooftop greenhouse. The project was launched as part of this year’s Chelsea Fringe Festival, an event dedicated to green urban projects – from grassroots community gardens to avant-garde art installations.

In an effort to create a cleaner and greener future, last week the Essex Wildlife Trust officially opened the new Thurrock Thameside Nature Park – a 120 acre reserve built on top of a former landfill. Over the past half a century London has shipped piles of trash up the River Thames to the Mucking Marshes Landfill where it festered as a blemish reminding the world of how messy the human race can be. But after many years of rejuvenation, this new nature park has proven that we can make substantial efforts to reverse what past generations have trashed.

London’s Design Museum has formed a new partnership with furniture company Vitra to create a pop-up garden on the banks of the River Thames. The garden will showcase pieces by some of the design world’s biggest names, including Charles and Ray Eames, Jasper Morrison, Jay Osgerby and Verner Panton in a colorful prefab case.

Davis Langdon, an AECOM company, will work on Google’s new headquarters in King’s Cross as cost consultant and the company’s agent. Davis Langton will also be supporting the HQ’s development manager, Argent. The one million square foot building, designed by London-based architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris(AHMM), will occupy a 2.4 acre plot at the 67 acre King’s Cross development. The mammoth development will break ground later this year and is scheduled for completion in 2016.

Saddled with the burden of not knowing whether or not they could trust their long-time human partners, the country’s horse establishment rallied its members and announced a transit strike until the scandal is resolved.

Industrial design duo Leander Angerer and David Ross have redesigned a late Victorian-era staircase over three stories in a private home in northwest London for Cathal McAteer, founder of Folk Clothing. Reusing the existing joinery, Angerer and Ross have converted an exquisite Victorian staircase into a contemporary, light and musical structure by replacing the banisters with tennis racket strings.

Each year, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens invites an architect to design a temporary structure in the park. This year, 41-year-old Sou Fujimoto will become the youngest architect to accept one of the world’s most sought after commissions. The cloud-like structure of steel poles will stretch over 350 square meters of lawn and create a transparent terrain exploring the pastoral context of the landscape. Forming an irregular ring, the latticed poles will simultaneously protect visitors from the elements while allowing them to still enjoy the park.

But London-based design studio Hendzel and Hunt has the solution: sustainable furniture that cleverly doubles as a tribute to sunshine-filled times past and present. Their custom 12 O’Clock Shadow cabinet, made from salvaged wood, is inspired by the beautiful light in their client’s room, and it permanently captures the shadows cast on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

The University of East Anglia in Norwich, England will soon be home to one of the greenest buildings ever created in the United Kingdom. The new £8M Norwich Research Park (NRP) Enterprise Centre will serve as a gateway for the university and will house offices, classrooms, meeting areas, and a large lecture hall. The NRP Enterprise Centre will aim to achieve BREEAM Outstanding and Passivhaus Certification, which means that the low-carbon building will need very little energy and will be constructed using a range of sustainable building strategies.

When something as devastating as a hurricane impacts your life, it can shatter your outlook on the world. Inspired by the broken glass surrounding his home after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, New York artist Daniel Arsham has created three new figurative sculptures. Covered in shards of cast off glass, the piece also references his previous adventures in upcycling where the artist collected 25,000 defunct ping-pong balls to cover the walls of his tiny NYC apartment.
