This week, the all-electric Tesla Model S was named the 2013 World Green Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show! With a sleek design and a battery range of up to 285 miles on a single charge, the Model S beat out the all-electric Renault Zoe and the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid to win the prestigious award. Despite a highly-publicized debate between Tesla founder Elon Musk and the New York Times over the car’s range, the Model S is one of the hottest electric cars on the market today, and this award will further solidify its status as one of the top green cars currently in production.

The 2013 World Green Car of the Year will be announced later this week at the New York International Motor Show, and the three finalists have been named. Vying for the prized title are two all-electric cars—the luxury Tesla Model S and the more modest Renault Zoe—alongside the Volvo V60 plug-in diesel hybrid. For US drivers, the question may be somewhat academic; the Renault Zoe is presently only available in Europe, while the Volvo V60 hybrid was available in Europe, until it sold out for this production year. Honda gave us a preview of Acura’s new supercar with their NSX concept at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, and now fans of the car have something new to be excited about. The NSX concept was the preview of the much anticipated successor to the NSX supercar, but unlike the original NSX that was solely powered by a V6 engine, the NSX concept featured a new hybrid drivetrain.  Honda CEO President Takanobu Ito recently confirmed that the same hybrid system will be used in the next Acura RL flagship sedan.

Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand is about to get a new electric vehicle that will be based on the Nissan Leaf EV. Nissan is being quiet about the details of the upcoming Infiniti EV, but company officials have stated that it will share its powertrain with the Leaf, while placing more emphasis on performance. To give us a preview of what we can expect, Infiniti is going to unveil a concept version of the EV at the 2012 New York Auto Show next month.

Fisker Automotive just released a teaser sketch of its next model, the Fisker Nina plug-in hybrid, ahead of its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The teaser photo doesn’t provide a very clear view of what the new Fisker mid-size sedan plug-in hybrid will look like, but it will obviously borrow styling cues from the Karma.

In advance of the New York International Auto Show, BMW CEO Jim O’Donnell announced to the Detroit News that the company will be releasing 1,100 of it’s newest electric vehicle, the ActiveE. That’s great news for green transportation, however further into the interview, O’Donnell went on to say that he doesn’t put faith in the new ev 1 Series coupe, and frankly that electric vehicles just don’t work!

Porsche has created a special edition of its 911 GTR 3 hybrid to commemorate passing the 1 million Facebook fan mark. The hybrid race car is plastered with 27,000 signatures of Porsche fans and will be kept in Porsche’s Stuttgart museum after its debut this week in New York. The 911 GT3 R hybrid draws a hefty 480 horsepower from an engine and 80 horsepower each from two motors that turn on to kick up the acceleration for short bursts. No word on fuel mileage, as this particular hybrid is more about boosting power than efficiency, but Porsche recently tested the car on the Nurburgring test track in Germany and believes that this car signifies the future of motorsports.
