Steven Haulenbeek used simple materials and construction techniques to build this stripped down, efficient LED lamp. The humorously titled Apoc lamp “can be deconstructed and turned into a small kindling fire at a moments notice. Just large enough to cook a rat,” but also, more sincerely, draws on the long tradition of tool-making and industrial inventions connected to the city of Chicago over the last century. Available for purchase in the desk and floor versions, the lamp will be part of the Chicagoland exhibit at Wanted Design.

By now, we hope that most of you know that swapping incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs saves money and energy, but there’s still a lingering misconception that LED bulbs emit a cold, bluish light that is just not as warm or attractive as the old filament-filled bulbs we grew up with. To dispel this fallacy, we sought out a group of people with a critical eye for light bulb color and ambiance – lighting designers on the show floor of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at New York Design Week. These meticulous designers take light warmth and quality very seriously (that is their job after all), so we couldn’t think of anyone better suited to give an honest opinion about the latest generation of high-tech LED light bulbs. Watch our video above to see how we retrofitted five gorgeous designer lamps with new Philips LED light bulbs – and in the process saved $1,732.86 in energy costs and won over some designer converts to the future of LED lighting.

Reclaimed wood furniture is usually so predictable: large upcycled beams from buildings, or slabs of driftwood turned into benches and stools. Thats why Brent Comber’s unique reclaimed wood furniture – made from bundles of small irregular pieces – is such a breathe of fresh air. We discovered the Canadian designer’s innovative, eco-friendly furniture last year at ICFF, and it was one of our favorite things at New York Design Week. This year we are excited to see Brent Comber back and better than ever, with a beautiful new line of work called “Shattered”.

Spotted by our editors at ICFF, the MoodBroom by Peteris Zilbers looks like a mundane mop at first glance, but upon further inspection, you can see that it is actually a source of light. The quirky design is named for the fact that its light color can be switched to match the owner’s mood, and the humorious lamp had showgoers doing double-takes all day long.

Lighting designer Christopher Poehlmann is no stranger to Inhabitat or the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. We’ve long been a fan of Poehlman’s gorgeous, sculptural ‘New Growth’ lamps, which are lighting fixtures fashioned from recycled pipes into the shapes of tree branches. Although 2012 marks CP Lighting’s 18th year at the ICFF, the firm continues to produce exciting new eco-friendly furnishings for every new show, putting them high on our list of favorite designers. Poehlmann’s latest creation is this incredible tree-shaped floor lamp and dining room table combination that literally stopped us in our tracks. Like all of Poehlmann’s work, it’s hand-crafted from recycled pipes to produce a uniquely organic design piece.
