We’ve covered [2] the Chevy Volt [3] extensively over the past few years, and we are now excited to announce that the EV has just claimed the title of Green Car of the Year at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show [4]! In a year filled with new market releases [5] and incredible concepts, the already popular Volt has risen above the competition to become the first electric vehicle [6] to ever claim this prize.

Aside from its commercial availability, the Volt’s progressive Voltec propulsion system is what pushed it to the forefront of the electric vehicle race. The impressive system can take the car up to 50 miles on a single charge before a gas-powered generator kicks in to provide electricity that can take the car for another whopping 300 miles. This technology has transformed the way consumers view electric cars [5], breaking down consumers’ fear that their vehicle will go kaput once the battery has been drained.

As Joel Ewanick, VP, U.S. Marketing, General Motors [8]states, “The Green Car of the Year award validates the Chevrolet team’s promise to deliver a practical electric vehicle.” He continues, “The Volt’s a transformational technology that will lead our industry into a new age of vehicle electrification.”

The Green Car of the Year award is part of Green Car Journal’s [9] mission to showcase environmental progress in the auto industry, highlighting exemplary vehicles that push the bounds of environmental performance in meaningful and quantifiable ways. This year’s jury included six environmental and automotive experts along with Green Car Journal editors, where the jurors selected the 2011 Chevrolet Volt from five finalists that included the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and Nissan LEAF.
