In the past, the general consensus by all those working for Fox News has been that the Chevy Volt [1] was an epic misstep for the Obama administration and that it was an initiative forced upon General Motors. However, after having Lee Spieckerman, CEO of Spieckerman Media appear in a segment entitled ‘Can the Chevy Volt Help Win the War on Terror?’ [2] hosted by Steve Doocy, the conservative channel appears to have done a complete U-turn.

In the past, Fox News, republican policy makers and political analysts have all slammed the Chevy Volt [3]to the point where former GM boss Bob Lutz has roundly condemned the negative press.

In February, Lutz was reported as saying [4]: “What on Earth is wrong with the conservative media movement that it feels it’s OK to spread false information; OK to damage the reputation of perhaps the finest piece of mechanical technology our country has produced since the space shuttle; OK to hurt an iconic American company that is roaring back to global pre-eminence; OK to hurt American employment in Hamtramck, Mich. [where Volt is built] [5], as long as it damages the Obama administration’s reputation?”

It seems that his feeling of hurting technological development for the sake of political point scoring is shared by Lee Spieckerman, who is a self-confessed oil-loving, “drill, baby, drill’ Texan [6]. Speaking to Doocy, Spieckerman defended the Volt saying: “[Fox commentators] seem to have a fetish with demonising the Volt and they perpetuate this myth that the Volt was forced on GM during the bailout. It had been in development two years before Obama was elected, and the tax break for buying the Volt was implemented by the Bush administration. That was not something that occurred under the Obama administration.”

He continued by adding that a vehicle that doesn’t run on oil was not only more efficient energy-wise, but was good for national security. Of course, he did point out that the electricity generated for the car came courtesy of coal.

“I don’t understand what is so conservative about wanting to send $35 billion to Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela for his oil or to send $70 billion to Middle Eastern Opec countries,” Spieckerman said. “We’re propping up the world oil price, which is giving Iran the resources it needs to develop nuclear weapons, indirectly its funding Hezbollah and Hamas and terrorists that are trying to kill Americans.”

“It’s the iPhone of the American automobile industry, it won the North American car of the year, the European Car of the year, both in 2011, the first time that’s ever happened. It is the safest car on the road according to the International Institute of Highway Safety, so this is a wonderful vehicle.”

His statement also forced Fox News to highlight the fact that with over 30 million Volts sold, the US’s foreign oil consumption had dropped. Spieckerman even  addressed the controversy of the Volt’s relatively high price: “Over five years you’ll save a ton of fuel. There’s a price differential but at the end of the day we really only need to get the Volt 20% cheaper to make it comparable to the Chevy Cruze, which is the gasoline model equivalent. Look at the flat screen TVs, they’ve come down 50% in five years, computers have gone down 90%.”

Even more surprising? Doocy agreed saying, “You’re right, it’s a cool car and it’s smooth as glass.”

Of course, GM might not want to go with Spieckerman’s suggestions of car stickers that say “I’m driving an anti-terrorist automobile.” But conservatives not only defending, but supporting the Volt?! What sort of strange parallel world is this? What next? Obama supporting a major oil pipeline? [7]Oh, wait…
