You may not see your lip gloss as much more than a way to add a bit of sparkle to your smile, but the children mining the material that makes your makeup glimmer have much less to beam about. According to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald, mica, a key ingredient in many cosmetics, is being mined by children in an impoverished region of India. The paper reports that the children put to work in these mines are at serious risk for snake and scorpion bites, and the hollowed-out caves they mine in often collapse. Children often also suffer cuts, skin infections, and respiratory illnesses like bronchitis, silicosis, and asthma.
