Mother Earth let out her own ‘celebration’ of sorts on Earth Day this year, in the form of the eruption of Chile’s Calbuco volcano. For the first time in 42 years, the volcano erupted and sent a billowing tower of ash up toward the clouds. Over 4,000 area residents within a 12-mile radius were forced to evacuate their homes and, thanks to living in the information age, amazing photography and video of the natural spectacle were available online within minutes. The volcano, which showed no signs of activity prior to the first eruption, actually exploded twice within a few hours. Stunning photos of the eruption capture a mystical scene that looks almost too amazing to be real, but it most certainly is.
