Record-breaking pollution in Beijing and environmental problems across China have forced the government to issue a timetable for oil companies to meet new standards for cleaner fuel. The laws focus on automobile diesel, as vehicle emissions are an increasing concern in China as car ownership increases rapidly.
The increase in China’s toxic emissions, as witnessed in recent record-breaking smog levels in Beijing, has forced the state to introduce a new set of standards for delivering cleaner oil. So far, the standard has been adopted only in Beijing, but is projected to become mandatory throughout the country in four years.
The Beijing government has already carried out a series of temporary emergency measures, including shutting down 103 polluting factories and removing 30 percent of government vehicles off the city roads. Despite that, the air in Beijing remained heavily saturated with smog for days.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration plans to introduce a new standard that will limit the sulfuric content in automobile diesel to 50 ppm.
