It seems that the title of World’s Biggest Offshore Wind Farm is a fleeting thing – at the moment it is held by¬†Thanet Wind Farm in the North Sea [2], but soon it could belong to Bohai Bay in China. It is not surprising that China could soon usurp this title, as not only is the country now one of the largest producers of solar energy and photovoltaic technology, it’s also leading the world in wind turbine production [3].

The new wind farm in Bohai Bay, which is a few hours from Beijing, began construction this week, but it’s been in the works since 2005 when China passed renewable energy legislation. Leading the wind farm’s development is the state owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) [4], who are experts in offshore energy production.

While you may think it is unusual for an oil company to be financing a renewable energy project, the two separate schemes actually share certain technical and engineering similarities such as the need for stable offshore platforms and rigs.

When the wind farm is finished, with current deadlines citing 2020, it will be the world’s largest with an energy production of 1,000 MW. Thanet Wind Farm in the North Sea currently produces 300 MW while the largest wind farm onshore [6], in Oregon, produces 845 MW.

The massive project has received $2.2 billion from the Chinese government, who is aiming to build enough wind farms to produce 750 Gigawatts of offshore wind power for China. That is enough energy to, in theory, power the East Coast of the United States four times over.
