China’s BYD Auto to Debut 2 PlugIn EVs at the Detroit Auto Show

Environmentally friendly automobiles [5] are popping up all over the place these days and BYD Auto [6] of China is set to throw two more models into the mix at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show [7]. At the show — which takes place in mid-January — BYD will debut its e6 Premier [8] all-electric crossover and its S6DM dual-mode plug-in hybrid SUV. These will be added to BYD’s electric roster, which already includes the F3DM [9] plug-in hybrid which is currently for sale in China. The news floating around is that BYD has its sights set on entering the US plug-in market soon after the two new cars debut.

The two new vehicles [5] will sit alongside the F3DM plug in electric and their pure electric K9 e-Bus. Together they cover a range of electric personalities. The all-electric e6 Premier crossover features a BYD iron-phosphate “FE” battery and has an expected range of 186 miles and a top speed of 87 mph. The S6DM dual-mode plug-in hybrid SUV has an expected all-electric range of 38 miles and an extended range of 310 miles when the 2.0L gasoline engine is engaged — it also has a sun roof layered with solar panels to help charge the battery.

BYD Auto is a subsidiary of the much larger BYD Co Ltd which designs and manufactures rechargeable battery technology [11]. They’ve announced also that at the Detroit Auto Show they’ll be showing some great “Green City Solutions” from their parent company including solar panels, home energy storage units and energy-saving LED lighting. BYD’s K9 e-Bus, a 40 foot long all-electric bus, will also be on display in Detroit. The bus has an expected 155 mile range and with 40 feet of space could fit a whole host of energetic school kids safely inside.
