China’s record-breaking air pollution levels have forced the nation’s government to impose tougher fuel economy standards on the auto industry. The most recent measure in the country’s battle for clean air will limit fuel consumption of passenger cars to 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers by 2015 and 5 liters by 2020. This will also affect foreign car makers, as they will be forced to adjust to the new regulations if they plan to launch models in the world’s largest car market.

Record-breaking pollution in China has put the car industry in the spotlight of the nation’s struggle for clean air. Beijing’s city government has already carried out a series of environmental measures concerning vehicle emissions and is expected to introduce new ones in the years to come.

The new regulations aim to significantly reduce vehicle emissions by imposing a fuel consumption restriction on car manufacturers. Passenger cars will be expected to consume less then 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers by 2015 and 5 liters by 2020. This will force car makers to make more fuel-efficient engines and invest in hybrid technologies.
