Spaces between the separate volumes create a sense of community in each block and also promote natural ventilation [1]. This layout also disguises the fact that there are 300 apartments in total, a space-saving strategy that is necessary for a city that has already been developed to near full capacity.

Neutelings Riedijk Architects incorporated renewable energy into the 110, 000 m2 building, which will be built near to the Grande Bibliothèque [2]. In addition to tapping geothermal energy and installing solar-heated pumps, the team will pre-cool fresh air and recycle gray water as well in order to support the city’s overall climate plan.
