Code-X’s Solar Powered Yacht – The Ultimate Hybrid Luxury Boat

Eco-minded luxury yacht lovers are undoubtedly eyeing the Code-X-Yacht [5]; a hybrid catamaran which according to Code-X, “unites radical purism, the optimal benefit of renewable energy and the sheer power of a racing machine in one boat.” The yacht, built by Switzerland-based Code-X [5], is powered by two Ilmor Marine 710 horsepower V10 Formula 1 engines [6], along with a bank of solar cells [7] that store power in on-board lithium ion batteries.

The yacht moves at an unimpressive nine knots when powered solely by solar energy [8], but it speeds up to 90 knots (with a 90 kilometer range) when petroleum is added into the mix. Code-X [9] doesn’t skimp on the yacht’s luxury details. The two-bed yacht contains a Kevlar/carbon fiber hull, a canopy that tilts up to the rear swim deck, and a hot tub. Code-X [5] only divulges the yacht’s pricing with an application; and we imagine this type of smooth sailing comes with a hefty price tag.
