Gallery: Coke and World Wildlife Fund Turn Classic Red Soda Cans White ...


You know it’s the holidays when you begin to see those adorable Coca-Cola polar bears all over the place, but with the catastrophic effects of global warming, real life polar bears are not nearly as abundant. To raise awareness for these lovable creatures and their endangered surroundings, Coca-Cola has announced that it is teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for a project they call Arctic Home. Starting in November, 1.4 billion red Coca-Cola cans will be turned white in honor of the bears and the important cause.

For those who love polar bears – but not necessarily drinking sugary soda – $1 donations can be text messaged to 357357 or donations can be made online at Coca-Cola will initially donate $2 million to the World Wildlife Fund and will continue to match consumer donations through March, up to an additional $1 million. The partnership will also release an IMAX feature film in 2012 called “To the Arctic 3D” by academy award nominated filmmakers MacGillivray Freeman Films.

Global warming has caused many arctic areas to melt, greatly endangering the habitats of polar bears, arctic foxes, and hares. The lack of icy surfaces force polar bears to swim farther and farther in search of a home, depleting their nourishment and food supply. Bacteria and parasites are also beginning to flourish in the increased temperatures. The U.S. Geological Survey predicts 66% of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050.

Gerald Butts, president and CEO of WWF Canada told The Vancouver Sun, “We really hope that this is one of those issues where regardless of what you think of the causes of climate change, its realities are inescapable and nowhere is that more true than in the Arctic.”

The white Coca-Cola products will be available through March 2012.

    I’m glad Coke Cola is doing this it’s way cool, but I wish they could put a message on the cans too, or somebody to get the message over to people that we’ve got to restore the climate and implement some emergency tactics “Help deflect the sun’s heat away from the ice and paint our roofs white” “Decrease power usage and reduce fossil fuel consumption to help reverse global warming” Things like that could be promoted on the cans as well. People need to get the idea quicker than we’re doing.
