Colorful Frii Concept Bike is Built from Injection-Molded Recycled Plastic

Israeli industrial design [4] student Dror Peleg has designed a colorful concept that combines two of our favorite things: cycling [5] and recycling. Peleg’s Frii bike strays far from the norm – not only in material [6] use, but in production – it’s made from recycled plastic that has been melted and injection molded into a lightweight, durable and colorful bike born anew.

Appearing a bit like a life-sized version of a K’nex [7] construction, the Frii concept bike is made from recycled plastic [8] that has been re-manufactured locally. Components for the Frii would be injection molded into modular shapes, which could be snapped together to form a solid single-speed cruiser appropriate for flat-surface street riding.
Peleg’s bike was created as his final project for his industrial design degree at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design [9] in Jerusalem, Israel. The process of injection molding is quite popular in Israel, where it is used to make an array of consumer home products. Peleg’s design utilizes readily available recycled materials [6] and existing facilities – both of which boast a lower carbon footprint than seen in typical bike manufacturing. And to top it off, once out of commission, the bike can be recycled again!
