Crazy Stacked London City Farmhouse Design Draws Its Power from Human Waste
Posted By Tafline Laylin On July 26, 2011 @ 8:34 am In Architecture | No Comments
This zany London City Farmhouse design by Catrina Stewart takes a good, long, and somewhat irreverent look at London's future, and proposes a handful of radical solutions to the problems envisioned there. A recent Bartlett School of Architecture student, Stewart has created a prototype of a very colorful farmhouse building that is used like a Venus Fly Trap or contemporary marketing techniques to lure human beings to the site. Every curious body who enters the farmhouse will then be required to donate their feces and urine, which will be used to power the facilities. The success of this venture depends almost entirely on how well the gimmicks attract visitors (and how well they, in turn, can donate their "resources" on demand).
Since the visitors alone are not expected to donate sufficient waste, Stewart imagines that new public toilets will be installed throughout London and that the waste collected there will power homes . Communities will congregate around these facilities in order to harvest the energy they will generate.
At this futuristic farmhouse, nothing will be wasted. Every calorie produced will be consumed as exhaustively as possible and then recycled. What’s more, animals will become more valuable as energy producers than food. Cows will be harvested for the methane gas they produce and electric eels will be used to power the elevators.
While this is definitely a funky design, we think it is an excellent thought experiment that takes a frank (and colorful!) look at how our basic needs may soon become very difficult to meet and how we will necessarily alter our thinking to find more creative energy sources.
