The TODAY Show said they are expired condoms, so that's where the sustainability comes in.

If you have to make clothes out of latex, wouldn't it be better to just make them out of a sheet of it, rather than wasting the energy used to make and pack the condoms, and then reconfigure them into a dress?

Not convinced I'm afraid. And even if anyone would contemplate a 'recycled' item of clothing, the logistics of gathering them would be... erm, problematic.

We shoul thankful that condoms are saving the lives of so many people by f=ighting against virus.I consider the God saving the lives of so many people in this world. Then we should consider the condoms as gift to human beings afor protection

Thanks for your comment MegO. I def agree with you that preventing unwanted pregnancies is a crucial part of sustainability that is often overlooked.

Well, if we really want to talk about sustainability and material purposes, condoms are far better for the environment if they are used to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STIs... they aren't that great for fabric!

But it's a great promotion for the use of condoms. It is a strong statement for safe sex!

And there is a company in Brazil that uses sustainably tapped latex, which can be a very natural material when tapped from trees and not treated with baths of harsh chemicals... Latex is like cotton, or bamboo, or anything else, i can be sustainable or not, depending on how the crop is grown then processed... Then all a condom company would have to do is work on biodegradable packaging and sustainable transportation, and environmentally friendly contraception could be there to be enjoyed! :)

Well, latex isn't exactly "green" in its manufacture or recyclability. Also, it's not well known for durability when exposed to sunlight. So these would be evening dresses only, I guess. :)

Nice post. I voted "gross" only because you talked about recycled "used" condoms being used... lol
