As the Texcoco region is key to the hydrological systems of Mexico City, the park [2] will serve as part of the city’s water infrastructure with 11 rivers, 14 canals for waste water, 4 water treatment plants and 5 lakes. The green infrastructure of the park will also act as a flood protection [3] system for Mexico City. The project aims to restore the habitat of 300,000 migratory birds and 153 different species. Not only that, but the geography of the park is such that it will act as a natural boundary to contain the ever-sprawling city limits of Mexico City.

Programming includes ecological zones, agricultural zones, wetlands, energy production zones, 40,000,000 cubic meters of watersports, 4500 hectares of reforestation [4] and museums. The park’s biggest water feature, the Nabor Carillo Lake, spans over 2,259 acres. The park as a whole is projected to be 19 times bigger than Mexico City’s airport, the Benito Juarez International Airport.
