Kamvari Architects’ Crete Bioclimatic School a gorgeous bridge-like building that connects students to the land by stretching across gorgeous vistas, planted gardens, grasses, and ponds. Spanning almost 200 feet, the school is designed as an informal gateway between the east and west. The sophisticated modern structure is lined with algorithmically-derived louvers that flood the interior with natural lighting and ventilation.
Kamvari’s plan is elevated 13 feet above the landscape, creating a plaza and gathering space for students below. The area beneath the volume can also act as an all-weather outdoor classroom . The grounds are divided into educational and recreational areas, including a learning garden, a playground, a pond, and a series of mathematical puzzles to challenge the students while they are at play.
The floating rectangular volume also creates an internal enclosure that serves as a safe and secure haven for students and teachers. Inside, the school ’s common areas provide space for socializing, programming, play and workshops. The halls also feature lounge areas with furniture, climbing walls, and other multi-use features that welcome students.
The curvilinear walls create a sleek and futuristic space for children to learn, while giving teachers visibility from one floor to the next to ensure safety. The louvers and skylights all daylight to illuminate classrooms and common areas without electricity. Kamvari Architects’ Crete Bioclimatic School is futuristic haven for progressive learning .
