CSX Transportation [1], New York State officials and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) joined together today to unveil the second GenSet low-emissions locamotive in Selkirk, New York. The locomotive was funded partially by the EPA and CSX, and will be used at Selkirk yard helping to reduce harmful emissions [2] in the area. The GenSet locomotive runs with three small engines — as opposed to one large engine that most locomotives use — which can be turned on and off as needed. It is capable of reducing nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by approximately 80 percent, and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent.

CSX is a leading transportation [3] company in the US, providing over 21,000 miles of rail routes in 23 states. As a company, they pledged to reduce their carbon emissions by 8 percent by 2011 — not a huge number, but they did reach that goal one year ahead of schedule — and the GenSet locomotive is just part of their plan to reduce fuel use and emissions even further. “The GenSet locomotive you see behind me represents the next generation of sustainable technology [4],” said Skip Elliott, vice president, public safety and environment, CSX Transportation. “We are proud of our partnership with EPA and the State of New York, which helps us serve our customers and communities with the most efficient and environmentally friendly service every day.”

“This new locomotive — with three smaller engines that cycle on and off according to need — will reduce emissions and save diesel fuel as goods are moved efficiently across the state,” said Stanley Gee, executive deputy commissioner of NYSDOT. “This innovative technology [4] is an example of Governor Cuomo’s goal of creating a new green economy with livable communities, new jobs and sustainable growth.”
