De Laatste Kruimel opened early last year and is a great little spot for enjoying delicious homemade organic food like classic lemon poppy seed scones. Its central feature is a pay desk, storage and table all in one, which was constructed from stacked shipping pallets. Made with the help of a craftsman friend, Martin Peterse , the recycled furniture gives the café a unique ready-made identity while giving the pallets a new life.
The place has been decorated with Ivelina’s vintage objects, which she found by constanty popping ito the nearby Noordermarkt fleamarket. Her partner, Pavel, who spent 7 years working at restaurants, is the brains and brawn behing the sumptuous tasty food . From Pies, quiches, bread and croissants to marmelades, Pavels cooks them all in his open kitchen.
White enamel colanders are used hanging luminaires in the kitchen. An old coffee grinder serves as a unique base for a Tiffany-style lampshade. The sturdy shelves used to support cooking ingredients, utensils and even a small oven were also created from pallets.
The chalked menu on the wall changes every week so people don’t get bored and come back for more — although classic staples remain year round. Moreover, De Laatste Kruimel throws nothing away; for instance, yesterday’s scones and hard bread are recycled into bread pudding or French toast.
The perfect little spot for homemade delights, good coffee and a bit of people watching, Amsterdam’s De Laatste Kruimel’s food will definitely have you devouring the last crumb.
