As the exclusive media sponsor of the Green Room, an eco-focused space within premiere fashion trade show Designers & Agents, we were thrilled to see some of top designers in eco-fashion all in one space. Although we were technically ‘working’ at D&A, the bright and cheery Green Room looked so much like an eco-fashionista’s dream boutique, complete with bubblegummy eco-art and elegant furnishings by Uhuru, that we couldn’t help but want to go shopping! And we did! From ruffly sweet sweater dresses to sleek silver recycled tyvek tops, we tried on so much eco-goodness that we knew we had to share our favorite looks with you. So without further ado, here are our favorite new green styles from the D&A trade show – modeled of course, by yours truly….
JESSICA IN TURK + TAYLOR
Senior Editor Jessica paired a sleek, recycled polyester bias cut tank in silver with a wool, hemp, and lyocell blend pleated schoolgirl skirt in black, both by Turk + Taylor. Her outfit is topped off with an uber-soft alpaca wool and silk blend cardigan in navy with delicate recycled leather rose brooch by Anardo and Skyum. Jessica completed the look with her own gold TOMS Shoes.
JILL IN AYNI
Editor-in-Chief Jill loved Anardo & Skyum’s sophisticated and easy-to-wear sweater dresses. These superfine garments are made out of sustainable alpaca wool and silk and are crafted in Peru by Andean women who receive fair wages and take pride in being able to improve their living conditions through their work. To accessorize, Jill picked a bold leaf cuff made completely of reclaimed metals by Alkemie. Dara Gerson, half of the Alkemie husband and wife design team, told us about the inspiration for the cuff – a leaf that she found sitting on her driveway one day!
OLIVIA IN PO-ZU
New York Editor Olivia liked these super-comfy wool, natural latex and coconut husk ballet flats by PO-ZU and picked out a fun and locally produced bubble wand pendant necklace by Laura Lobdell Jewelry. This particular pendant was not sustainable, but can be specially ordered to be made out of reclaimed metal. If you like the bubble wand pendant, please encourage Laura to use more recycled metal by placing an order!
YUKA IN HOUSE-WEAR
As for yours truly, I knew from the moment I walked into the Green Room that my pick was this clever trompe l’oeil shift dress by House-Wear. The dress is part of House-Wear’s new PAPER WEAR collection and is made out of Tyvek, a material that is usually reserved for mailing envelopes! I was surprised at how soft and breathable this fabric alternative is. “It gets even softer with every wash,” mused designer Laura Sansone as I admired the light-as-a-feather pieces. House-Wear encourages everyone who buys their whimsical garments to send them to the Tyvek Recycling Center in Richmond, VA when they are done wearing them.
