Gallery: Deger Cengiz’s Threatening Cactus Terrarium Chair Puts Sitters...

If you're looking to serve up a side of sadism at your next cocktail party, this troubling cactus terrarium chair may be just what you need. NYC-based architect and designer Deger Cengiz unveiled the unsettling seat at ICFF this week, where it caused many a passerby to cringe - but a few brave souls did sit in it and lived to tell the tale. Do you find this chair clever or scary? Tell us in the comments below!

According to Cengiz, the Terrarium Chair “is an experimentation in which to investigate the effect of visual data to the user’s experience.” While it’s pretty obvious to most viewers that the barrel cactus is not a real threat because it’s contained inside the acrylic, its spiky spines do cause a temporary discomfort in most people.

The Terrarium Chair isn’t the only thought-provoking seat Cengiz has designed. We covered his grassy Chaise Lawn chair back in 2009. The resourceful designer also makes seats out of salvaged redwood from dismantled NYC water towers.
