Gallery: Dennis Design Center’s Milan Pop-Up Shop is a Shipping Pallet ...

Back in April, Denmark-based DENNIS Design Center participated in Salone Milan with a temporary shop devoted to creativity, inspiration and design. The design center was located in a parking lot outside the fair and took inspiration from gas stations. Built from discarded shipping pallets, the pop-up service station was meant to "refuel" visitors to the furniture fair and to show how easy DIY furniture building was. While open, professional craftsman built furniture from the pallets and at the end, lucky fair-goers got to take home a piece home. Starting today, DENNIS Design Center is back at it again at Art Basel in Switzerland.

DENNIS Design Center was asked to exhibit at the Milan Furniture Fair and they took over a space in a parking lot just outside of the entrance. The collective is focussed on showcasing design, encouraging discussing and helping society take part in design in their own lives. As the furniture fair is centered around design with people looking at it all day, they thought fair visitors may need to take part in a bit of creativity and fun. The pop-up design center was then conceived as a service station, or a creativity refueling station and took the form of a gas station.

The center was built from discarded shipping pallets and provided an office for the design center, complete with internet, computers, a printer and the like. They also brought woodworking tools with them and professional craftsmen who built pallet furniture throughout they day. They built benches, tables, chairs, ladders and much more, and at the end of the fair, some visitors took the pieces home with them. DENNIS Design Center wanted to show that DIY design is in fact possible. Now the design center is at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland with a similar exhibition. They’ll be teaching the philosophy of D.E.Y — Do Exotic Yourself. Thursday, the 14th, is their Easy Opening, then on Friday they will release the DENNIS book, and Saturday is the final TAKE AWAY PARTY, with local beer and a DENNIS stool.
