Design Academy of Eindhoven Students Show Off Their Newly Minted Chops at Their Masters Graduation Show

We recently attended the Design Academy of Eindhoven Masters' show where we spotted innovative works from what's sure to be the next generation of hot talents in sustainable design. We found the exhibition to be full of surprising, humorous and unique projects, including Tuomas Tolvanen's incredible vintage wooden furniture piece adorned with hand-cut metal rings (seen above). The Masters program at DAE was created for students to "find out what do they want to be", and for the last 25 years has been headed by renowned Dutch designer Gijs Bakker, co-creator of Droog Design. Sadly, after over two decades of guidance, love and inspiration, Bakker is bidding adieu to DAE.
Working with scientists and civil services, Giacomo Piovan created a system that turns contaminated soil into compressed blocks. The system employs the use of healing plants that are able to absorb and store precious metals as valuable future resources.
A graduate from the Social Design Department, Tristan Kopp created “prodUSER” to engage users in the assembly process of objects like bikes.
Ricardo Carneiro ‘s “Exploded Rituals” is a coffee maker that takes caffeine lovers on a journey of making their own beverage.
Jin Hyun Jeon ‘s tableware was specially designed for stimulating the user’s senses through form, volume, texture, color and temperature.
Indian-German Elena Pereira used flowers to create “In Bloom”, a collection of emotional interior design pieces that include a sculpture, flowers extracts, and a curtain made from dried roses.
Exposing and sculpting hidden building materials like expanded polystyrene (commonly used for wall insulation), Swedish Therese Granlung designed a series of quirky furniture pieces for the ec0-conscious home.
Graduate Jaenah Jung designed a massive table made entirely made of recycled cardboard. To one’s surprise, it’s full of hidden drawers!
We are very sad to see Gijs Bakker (posing here for us with a T-shirt gift by “ex-designer”, ex-DAE graduate Martí Guixé ) leaving his beloved job . His departure is said to to be due to “discontent with educational reform plans under development”. He is however very much looking forward seeing his new design-adventures. Good luck to Gijs!
